Flops that didn't exactly flop

For some reason we have an absolute fascination with the box office performance of movies. We shouldn't. I mean, if you think about it, how does the financial success or failure of a film have any influence at all on our enjoyment of that film? Unless you are an investor, it makes absolutely no difference. But for some reason, we cannot escape the almighty box office.
We are obsessed. If it were just a matter of cheering for our favorite movies, actors, directors, or franchises that would be one thing, but we have found a way to make it ugly. Instead of it being an "oh, cool, that thing I like did well and for some reason that makes me happy," has been replaced with a giddy joy at the failure of something that we have decided that we must hate.
Sometimes, those lesser emotions get the better of us and we jump the gun a little, declaring a movie a financial, and therefore, somehow, an artistic failure, before the jury is even in.
This week we take a look at some of those little movies that could. Films that were banished to the flop pile before we could see that they actually made money.
Speaking of, the Summer Movie League is back. Just go to www.summermovieleague.com, create a studio and join the Film Thugs 2014 league. The winner wins stuff.

The Marvel Film Universe

Founded in 1939 as "Timely Comics," the company we know as "Marvel" was a runaway success from the beginning. It's first publication was so successful that, after a second printing, it sold a combined 900,000 copies. While other companies came and went, Marvel was able to hold on and grow in popularity,
75 years later it remains as one of the big 2, standing side by side with DC.
However, in concept, Marvel stands completely alone.
Instead of just licensing out their biggest proprieties, Marvel decided to apply the model that made their comic books so successful to the film world. Instead of a collection of of uncollected titles being released by different companies, they consolidated their most popular characters into one universe and, in a way, caused a paradigm shift in the way comic book movies are approached.
So, join us as we take a look at the phenomenon that is Marvel Studios and their ever expanding film universe.

The past two weeks were very, very hectic for both of us. So, we decided to try out recording without a topic. We just talked. In honesty, this is more of a test episode for a completely different podcast we are still planning on launching. Hopefully you will enjoy hearing a stream of consciousness conversation.

You have more questions, we have more answers.

It's back. That's right the episode that all of you... well, most of you... well, some of you... ok, maybe one or two of you, have been waiting for is back. The return of Ask The Film Thugs.
The idea is simple. People send in questions to thugquestions@gmail.com, an e-mail address that neither one of us has access to, where Hunter from http://www.midnightmoviecowboys.com compiles and records them. Then, we answer them without any time to prepare. Everything happens completely off the cuff. It's a good time.
This week we have moved into our new, permanent studio, so... that's pretty cool.
Check it out and get our thoughts on various topics.
